SIX STEP BALANCE SYSTEM "TRAIN THE TRAINER" (approximately 6 hours)

Dr. Betty Perkins-Carpenter is a nationally renowned expert on fall prevention who has made a life long career of teaching people to be physically fit and safe and secure in their activities of daily living. Betty has served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and has been a speaker at the White House Conference on Aging. Betty's Six Step Balance System (www.howtopreventfalls.com ) born out of her years as an Olympic Diving Coach and 45 years working with seniors, makes improving the balance of older adults- balance is a major component of the system- easy and fun for everyone.

The "Train the Trainer" is a course about which Betty is passionate as she is devoting her own adult years to training health care professionals, adult caregivers, and interested older adults, to both learn her Six Step Balance System and subsequently to train older adults. The Six Step Balance System philosophy is based on the simple but profound belief that "fear of falling" is a major factor contributing to falling-a self-fulfilling fear. The Six Steps Balance System focuses on helping older adults to maintain/reclaim their balance through a series of activities of daily living that are fun and easy to do, give hope and motivate, and are designed to reduce falls and the fear of falling.

In this "Train the Trainer" course, you will learn how to teach the Six Step Balance System by learning each of the six steps and associated activities: Stretching in Bed Exercises, Balance Exercises, Ball Handling Exercises, Walking while Talking on the Phone (indoors) Exercises, The Slump, and Dancing with a Pillow. Once trained, there will be follow-up to hear your success stories and to offer help when and where needed.
